A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. To capture these images, each breast is placed between two plates for a few seconds while the x-rays are taken. Magnified views or specially angled films can be taken to provide better or clearer views if needed.
The advantage of mammogram is that it detects the majority of breast cancers. It is also easy to perform and is relatively inexpensive when compared to other screening tools. Mammograms can detect a tumor before it can be felt. Mammogram can also identify tiny specks of calcium that could be an early sign of cancer.
Women with dense breasts may require additional screening tests. When the breast has significant fibrous and glandular tissue that makes it hard to see small masses it is considered "dense". Read our "Dense Breast Q and A" for more information.
Women who are at increased risk of breast cancer may also require additional screening tests.
Breast MRI is one option that is often offered to these women. Contrast solution (dye) is sometimes injected through an IV into your arm during an MRI. This dye tends to "pool" in areas where there is potentially cancerous breast tissue. This is because tumors need to increase their blood supply in order to grow. These areas show up as white on the MRI. A biopsy may be performed during the MRI to confirm a breast cancer diagnosis. A separate test called a stereotactic breast biopsy may also be performed at another time.
