What is Pain?

Pain is your body's way of warning you that something is not right. If place your hand on a hot stove, the pain lets you know right away that you are hurt and you need to protect yourself. You may have pain from an injury, after surgery, or from a health problem like osteoarthritis, back pain or fibromyalgia.

Pain that starts quickly and lasts for a short time is called acute pain. Examples include pain from an injury, a headache, childbirth, or right after surgery.

Pain that goes on for months or years is called chronic pain. This pain involves changes to the brain and central nervous system that change the way a person processes their pain experience. Chronic pain can be exacerbated by fear of pain or disability, and there is often concurrent sleep disruption, anxiety or depression.  Chronic pain can result from any injury, trauma or illness. It is a complex combination of physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and societal factors that responds best to a multidisciplinary approach.
