Ultrasound Services at UPMC in Central Pa.

Ultrasound (or sonography) uses reflected sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues, including muscles, blood vessels and organs. Because sound waves are used, there is no radiation exposure during this procedure. At UPMC in central Pa., we use the most up-to-date ultrasound technology.

Our highly trained technologists are experts at analyzing and capturing high quality ultrasound images.

Ultrasound machines consist of a computer, a video display screen and a small, handheld device, called a transducer, which is used to scan the body. Ultrasound is often used for:

  • Examining abdominal organs, bladder, thyroid, breast, reproductive organs, and blood vessels in the neck, arms, and legs
  • Evaluating a baby from the first trimester through the end of the third trimester
  • Guidance for biopsy procedures (i.e., breast, thyroid, lymph node, internal organs)
