Teledermatology Services

If you have a rash, acne, or other skin concern, you don't have to wait long to see a UPMC dermatologist.

With the UPMC Teledermatology program, you can receive quick and secure care online.

Benefits of Teledermatology

Telemedicine and dermatology are a good fit because doctors diagnose skin problems visually. In fact, dermatologists train in part by looking at photos of various skin conditions.

There are many reasons to think about a telehealth visit, such as:

  • Convenience. You can upload photos at a time that works for you and your busy schedule. Dermatologists prefer you add your images prior to your video visit to increase the accuracy of a diagnosis.
  • Less travel time. If you live far away from a UPMC dermatologist or have trouble traveling, a virtual visit is easier.
  • Cost. There's no need to spend money on gas or parking fees. Depending on your insurance coverage, a virtual visit may cost less than an in-person one.

About UPMC Teledermatology Services

We offer 2 types of online outpatient dermatology care: asynchronous e-visit and synchronous video visits.

Asynchronous e-visits

To begin an asynchronous visit, go to eDermatology and follow the directions. You'll need to fill out a brief health questionnaire and upload some photos of the problem area.

Within 3 business days, a UPMC dermatologist will get back to you with a diagnosis and next steps, such as:

  • Send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy.
  • Order lab tests.
  • Let you know if you need an in-person or video follow-up appointment.

With eDermatology visits, you:

  • Can get an answer fast. This is vital for more serious conditions such as melanoma.
  • Don't need to wait for an appointment since you can complete a request anytime online.

Synchronous telemedicine visits

With synchronous telemedicine visits, you schedule a real-time video appointment just as you would an office visit. These work best for follow-up visits with your dermatologist.

You can schedule a video visit appointment on the MyUPMC app or by calling the dermatologist's office.

At your appointment time, you and the doctor will connect through live audio-video on the MyUPMC app.

If needed, your doctor can order prescriptions or lab work and schedule in-person or online follow-up appointments.

Is a Teledermatology Visit Right for Me?

Doctors can diagnose many common and uncommon skin conditions from a digital photo or video visit, such as:

  • Acne
  • Hives
  • Moles
  • Rashes
  • Rosacea
  • Skin growths
