Apply to volunteer at UPMC St. Margaret.
At UPMC St. Margaret, volunteers give the gifts of their caring and time. Because of their generosity, volunteers enable better service to be provided to our patients and visitors and allow the hospital to better fulfill its mission 365 days a year.
Whether you are a retiree, a stay-at-home mom, an energetic teen, or a student that needs health care career exploration, you can make a meaningful difference to the patients, their families, and the staff at UPMC St. Margaret through volunteering.
Other benefits include:
See below for some of the ways you can volunteer to help patients, families, and UPMC staff.
Not all opportunities listed are available at all times. Opportunities will be discussed in further detail during the interview process.
Volunteers provide emotional and spiritual support by serving as Eucharistic Ministers, making bereavement calls, and sitting vigils with dying patients.
Volunteers greet and help visitors and families find their way throughout the hospital.
Nursing Unit Volunteers will assist in various ways including checking in on patients, restocking medical supplies, providing comfort items to families and patients, etc.
Volunteers help patients, visitors, and families navigate the hospital at key entry points; as well as from department waiting rooms to treatment areas.
Trained and certified Pet Therapy animals and their owners visit patients and staff throughout the hospital. Our Pet Therapy dogs always bring a smile to everyone who sees them!
If you want to combine exercise with community service, become a physical therapy volunteer. Escorts take patients to therapy via wheelchair. These volunteers are able to provide a friendly visit with patients on the way to therapy.
All shadowing requests are processed through the Volunteer Services Department. Please contact the office to request the necessary paperwork. Shadowing experiences are arranged based on the students' interest and department availability. The Volunteer Services Department cannot arrange shadowing with physicians, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists or in the operating room.
Externships are arranged through affiliation agreements between UPMC and local colleges and universities to provide hospital-based training for course credit. Once the externship has been arranged through your school, the required paperwork will be coordinated by the hosting department and the Volunteer Services Department.
