David P. Gibbons, MHA, RN, was appointed president of UPMC Hamot March 1, 2017. Gibbons has been executive vice president and chief operating officer at UPMC Hamot since 2012 and between July 2014 and March of 2017, he held the dual leadership role as President, UPMC Northwest in Venango County as well as executive vice president and chief operating officer at UPMC Hamot. Gibbons served in the role of president, UPMC Northwest from 2009 until 2012.

At UPMC Hamot, Gibbons has had executive oversight of the majority of Hamot’s clinical service lines and has cultivated numerous business and community partnerships to enhance patient care. He was instrumental in establishing Hamot’s kidney transplant program, the first in the region and the first UPMC transplant program in the U.S. outside of Pittsburgh. He has overseen the expansion of OB/GYN services with the opening of the Magee-Womens Specialty Center; the planned construction of a new $111 million patient tower to be completed in 2020; and under his guidance, UPMC Hamot’s nursing staff achieved Magnet designation, the highest and most prestigious distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence.

At UPMC Northwest, Gibbons had oversight of Northwest’s service lines including business and physician relationships. UPMC Northwest includes a skilled nursing facility, a behavioral health unit, and a rehabilitation unit.  While at Northwest, he improved the operating margin, implemented the eRecord application, achieved Level II trauma accreditation, implemented Telehealth programs, and developed a comprehensive women’s program with Magee-Women’s Hospital.

Prior to joining UPMC, Gibbons was the chief operating officer at Kennedy Health System in Voorhees, N.J. Before that, he served as director of managed care for the Visiting Nurses Association of Greater Philadelphia; regional director of operations, marketing and finance for Oncology Services Inc., and director of oncology programs for U.S. Healthcare in Blue Bell, PA.

He holds an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Clarion University, as well as a master’s degree in health administration from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
