UPMC Bedford Annual Scholarships

The Memorial Hospital of Bedford County (MHBC) Foundation through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies is currently accepting applications from students interested in health care professions for the 2022 application period.

Through the generous donations of the late Dr. Bert and Lucille Wiley, as well as Thomas E. Bailey, the MHBC Foundation funds scholarships for students entering health profession studies. Interested students should create an account, complete an application, and supply supporting documents online.

Students may apply for both the Health Professions Scholarships (includes Dr. Bert & Lucille Wiley, Mary Pearl Hunt, Blackburn, and Obert Scholarships) and the Thomas E. Bailey scholarship by completing one application. Specific guidelines exist for each scholarship. The application is now closed. Please check back in January 2023.

The Health Professions Scholarships and the Thomas E. Bailey Memorial Scholarship provide financial assistance to students in health professions.

The Health Professions Scholarships Program awards up to $8,000 per year for up to four years to students who aspire to a career in health care. Pre-health care programs are not eligible.

To be eligible, applicants are required:

  • To be a Bedford County resident.
  • To have been accepted into a health careers program.
  • Demonstrate a financial need.
  • Commit to employment at UPMC Bedford for a period of three years, if a scholarship is awarded.

The Thomas E. Bailey scholarship is a one-time $4,000 scholarship available only to high school seniors that attend a Bedford County school. This program is awarded with no employment commitment and is not based on financial need. Students in pre-medical programs are eligible to apply.

The Education Committee of the MHBC Foundation selects applicants who have:

  • The ability to excel in and complete a health professions program.
  • Dedication to serve patients and co-workers in health care professions.

Hospital employees are eligible to apply for the Health Professions Scholarships in addition to receiving tuition reimbursement. Employee scholarships are funded through the Walter Allen Fund. UPMC Bedford employees interested in applying for the scholarships should create an account, review the guidelines, complete an application, and supply supporting documents here.
