Carey Welsh, MD

Carey Welsh, M.D.

Carey Welsh, MD, is a clinical neonatologist who joined the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine in 2018 and is certified in pediatrics and perinatal-neonatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Welsh received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in VA, followed by her neonatal fellowship at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee Womens Hospital.

Dr. Welsh’s interests focus on leadership, educational and clinical experience development as well as professional development across all members of the NICU clinical team. Through her positions as Director UPMC Newborn Medicine Advanced Practice Providers and Medical Director of the UPMC Neonatology Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship program she continues to develop ongoing education and professional development initiatives. She is an active member of the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) APP Fellowship Advisory Committee and CHP APP Task Force.

She is the Medical Director of UPMC Neonatal Transport, advancing community partnership, state of the art transport medical support, and is neonatal advisor to the STAT MedEvac Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania. In addition to transport medicine, clinical interests include CHP NICU postoperative pain QI initiatives and she is an active member of the CHP ECMO core faculty team. Since her arrival at UPMC she has received the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Chair’s Distinction Award in 2019 and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Advanced Practice Providers Distinctive Physician Award in 2020.

Dr. Welsh lives in Pittsburgh with her family and rescue dogs. She is an avid reader and traveler, with a focus on exploring all of America’s National Parks.

Alexandra Mastro, PA-C, MPAS, is a physician assistant in neonatology and is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She is a member of the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine at Magee-Womens Hospital and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is the Lead Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the Neonatology Fellowship Program.

Alexandra received both her Bachelor’s in Health Science and Masters of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from Gannon University. She completed her postgraduate neonatology fellowship program at UPMC in 2017.

In 2021, Alexandra became the Lead APP of the Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship Program. In addition to her educational role, she serves as a member on the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Advanced Practice Provider Advisory Committee. She is dedicated to precepting and mentorship. Her clinical interests include rotating as an ECMO Certified APP between the Level III and Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Her interests extend into research and quality improvement projects involving topics such as The Full NICU Staff Mortality Review, The FAST project: A new approach to lower-risk chorioamnionitis babies and Cord Blood Antibody Screening Protocol Identifies Infants at High risk of Pathologic Hyperbilirubinemia.

Other interests include bereavement, community outreach, reading, soccer and exercising.
