Neonatology Fellowship Program Curriculum for Advanced Practice Providers

UPMC's APP Neonatology Fellowship Program curriculum includes didactic and clinical portions.

Didactic Portion — Foundations in Neonatal Medicine

The didactic portion consists of a 4-week block of lectures that provide a solid foundation in neonatal medicine and are given by:

  • NICU faculty
  • NICU advanced practice providers
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Neonatal nutritionists
  • Neonatal developmental specialists
  • Sub-specialty faculty
  • Other clinical staff

The fellows will also work through clinical scenarios to help develop clinical decision-making and critical thinking skills. The fellows will have full access to the simulation lab to allow them hands-on training.

There will also be on-going lectures and multidisciplinary conferences throughout the year.

Clinical Portion — Rotations in Neonatal and Newborn Medicine

The clinical portion will consist of rotations in various UPMC facilities and units, including:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Delivery Room
  • Newborn Nursery

There will be a post-rotation exam on the last Friday of each rotation to ensure competency. Periodic evaluations will be given by attending physicians and clinical preceptors. The program director will also complete 6-month and yearly evaluations.
