About the Center for Engagement and Inclusion

The Center for Engagement and Inclusion is comprised of a robust staff devoted to advancing the organization’s Diversity and Inclusion Agenda. Diversity Directors, Employee Resource Groups, a Committee of UPMC Board of Directors dedicated to Diversity and Inclusion, and a full diversity and inclusion staff comprise the core infrastructure that supports the implementation of our diversity strategy. All diversity and inclusion efforts for UPMC are centralized and led by a Chief Diversity, Inclusion and Talent Management Officer, Dr. James E. Taylor, charged with executing leading-edge and next-generation diversity strategies to advance the organization’s diversity management capability and its national presence as a diversity leader.

Diversity, inclusion, and culturally competent medical care are defining characteristics of UPMC. The framework for our diversity strategy – coined the UPMC Diversity and Inclusion Agenda – is designed to achieve the following:

  • Workforce: Enhance the diversity and cultural competency skill-set of our employees.
  • Culturally Competent Care: Provide culturally and linguistically competent care to improve the health status of our increasingly diverse patient and member population.
  • Community: Enrich the health status of those who live and work in the communities we serve.
  • Marketplace: Grow our patient population and insurance membership through effective market segmentation strategies that target the fastest growing segments of the region.

From this Agenda, dozens of diversity and inclusion initiatives have been developed to implement across our organization. UPMC recognizes that talent and ability are not limited, but enhanced, by the diversity and cultural expertise that employees bring to the workplace. Diverse employee representation at all levels ensures that we have the knowledge, critical thinking, agility, and innovation required of a leading and forward thinking integrated delivery and finance system.
